Themes Across Time

A number of environmental priorities affect the West Cork coastline.  In this section we explore these themes across time to understand how they affect local communities, both past and present.

Fishing and Aquaculture

Stanhope Forbes, Good-Bye! Off to Skibbereen

We have identified a range of present-day environmental issues that relate to fishing and aquaculture.  We discuss these in our literature review.  Visit our online exhibition to learn about West Cork’s rich history of fishing from the 1700s to the present day.

West Cork is a renowned tourist destination. Our West Cork tourism story map looks at tourism in the region from 1700 to the present day.  However, with tourism come environmental concerns. We consider these in literature review on tourism and eco-tourism .

West Cork coastal communities are becoming increasingly concerned about the pollution of this maritime environment.  Pollution can occur through contaminants, litter, and activities such as dredging. Find out more about pollution issues, both past and present.

Climate Change

How is climate change affecting the West Cork coast? What can we do about it?  We discuss some considerations in our climate change literature review. We also consider the impact of climate on this coastline in our exhibition, West Cork and Climate.
