As part of the Deep Maps: West Cork Coastal Cultures project we wanted to engage with primary school children from our study area in West Cork.
In April 2017, we visited 5th and 6th classes of two schools and distributed a short questionnaire to determine what students valued about the coast/sea; whether they were aware of any problems relating to the coast/sea; and how they accessed information about the coast/sea. The pupils also provided input through art work and storytelling with maritime themes.
Dr Rob McAllen gave a fascinating talk about the maritime environment and conservation efforts, using specimens of animals to spark the pupils’ interest in all things marine. They were thrilled to be able to look at the marine animals up close.
The children were very engaged and the visits were a great success!
